I am always amazed at how so many mommy bloggers can keep their blogs updated daily. I am always thinking about the things I could write about, but that is where it stops. At a thought.
For the last 3 Mondays, I have been teaching a small group of 4H kids how to do different fiber arts projects. I had so many ideas on what I could do, but when it came to doing the teaching part I failed miserably. I am good at teaching my own kids, but I have a hard time teaching groups of other kids. The first class I attempted to teach the kids how to spin yarn on a drop spindle. Adam and I made about 10 spindles (which turned out very nice!) and I brought a bunch of prepared wool. Using a drop spindle takes some time to get used to. It takes coordination and patience to get it to go just right. A couple of the older girls were getting the hang of it, but some of the younger kids got frustrated. For the second class I tried to show the kids how to make a small felted bowl by wrapping a pingpong ball in wool, placing it in a plastic baggie with some warm soapy water in it, and rolling it back and forth in their hands like a snowball until it becomes a nice felted ball. The girls in the groups loved this project. The boys on the other hand cared more about the pingpong balls and quickly lost interest in the project. For the 3rd class, I tried to teach them how to needle felt. ACK! I will never do that again! The needles used for felting are so thin and delicate. I could only find one package of needles, so there were only 7 to pass around between the kids. After about 30 minutes, 5 of the needles were already broken. Most of the kids had to sit and watch the other kids until they could have a turn with the needles that were still intact. That was just a BAD day. By the end of the day, I felt like I was Debbie Downer. Nothing was going right for me.
The next day though, Tuesday, I stumbled across a blessing that I didn't know I had. Recently I have been looking over the sonlight curriculum, and trying to figure out how it all works. Last sunday a good friend of mine from church who uses sonlight showed me how it works, and how she uses it in her homeschool. She let me take her big box of Core 2 home to try out with my kids. It is a really good fit for our family! Core 2 is the perfect level for Gable and Madeline. While I was looking at this core 2, I remembered that a few years back I was given an instructors guide for core 3. At the time I thought that sonlight was too intimidating, and I would probably never use the guide. I thought that I had given away this core 3 guide either to a friend or goodwill. I was pleasantly surprised when I stumbled across this core 3 guide amongst the clutter of books in our 4th bedroom! So I have been using that with Ethan this week. What a blessing!
Our adoption is steadily plugging along. We were able to finish our three online classes and get our certificates sent off to the agency. The agency is still waiting on the government to finish up our criminal history reports. After they hear back from the criminal history report, they will assign us a social worker and get the homestudy going. In April Adam and I will have to attend a day long seminar on transracial adoption. I am really looking forward to that! I want to learn as much as I can, so I can be prepared to handle any situation that may arise with our new child.
My blog design business has been going pretty good too. There was a lull between clients there for about 3 weeks, but it has picked up once again. Being able to raise some donations by doing blogs for people is a huge blessing in itself. Thank you to all of you who allowed me to make your blogs beautiful!
