Recycled Clothing

All of us have felt the economic crunch this past year.  We definitely have!  When you are having tough times financially, it starts making us moms think more frugally.

What can we do to make our groceries stretch?  I see that the kids' clothes are getting too small.  What can I do to make these last longer? How can I get by with these cheap 2.50 T-Shirts from Wal-Mart?  So I put my creativity to work.

My latest creative experiment came to me while staring at an old pair of my daughter's jeans.  They were too short on her legs, but they still fit around her waist.  I thought, is it possible to turn these jeans into a cute skirt? My girls are ALL about long modest skirts (well, we all are).  So I gave Madeline a seam ripper, and let her go to town on the inseam of the pants while I dug through my old pile of fabric.   It took some work and finagling, but it actually turned out pretty cute!

This is Anna's skirt made out of an old pair of brown jeans and scraps of  fabric.

I have also been able to make dresses out of men's button up dress shirts.  Those are a little more complicated, but turn out adorable.  I am ok with complicated though when you can buy men's button up dress shirts for 25 cents at a garage sale!

  1. Very cute. I don't have any kind of sewing ability, so I could not take on something like this on my own, but it is inspiring!

  2. Oooo... great job! You can also cuff them up or add some fringe or a row of fabric at the bottom and make some cute capri's!

  3. Awesome idea Ali!

Would love to see more pics of your sewing creativity!
Long skirts are always hard to find, so even though I like capri's, this is a wonderful solution!

  5. I've made several skirts like this too. My daughter LOVES them and they are so easy! We've also found that you can add a little triangle of fabric to a cute skirt with a huge kick pleat too making it more modest.
