Thistles and Fiber arts

If any of you know me, you know that I am addicted to all sorts of fiber arts.  Knitting, crocheting, spinning, wool prep, weaving, you name it!

Do you know what this thistly looking plant has to do with fiber arts?

This thistle, is called a Teasel.  Back in the mid to late 1800's, woolen mill workers used rows of these Teasels to soften and nap woven wool fabrics.  The workers would taken fresh woven fabrics, and run the fabric along the rows of Teasels.  Now days they have machines to take the place of the Teasels.  But we still see plenty of them growing around Oregon.

  1. I did not know that. So the spiky parts of the teasel won't get stuck on the wool fabric?

  2. I have heard that interesting fact about teasels before. I wouldn't want to be the one having to collect them though. Thanks for letting me practice on your spinning wheel the other day. It's harder than it looks to find the right touch. Love you lots.
